Altria, the U.S. maker of Marlboro cigarettes, boosted its quarterly dividend by 4.1% to $1.02, marking the 55th straight year of dividend increases, the company said Thursday. Altria, whose shares were little changed Thursday at $51.83 after hitting a new 52-week high of $51.94, now yields 7.9%, one of the highest dividend rates in the S&P 500 index. Altria has long taken its dividend seriously, paying out about 80% of its earnings to shareholders. The company last year said it would target growth in the dividend at a mid-single digit annual rate through 2028. The company's payout has risen at a roughly 4% rate since 2018. The new dividend is about 80% of the company's projected earnings per share of $5.10 in 2024. Altria, the country's largest tobacco company, prioritizes its dividend over share buybacks. Some investors would like to see a more balanced return of capital to shareholders given the low valuation of Altria shares, but Altria has favored the dividend. Altria trades for around 10 times projected 2024 earnings. Altria is one of relatively few companies in the S&P 500 index that has raised its dividend more than 50 years in a row. Altria (ticker: MO) revised its adjusted earnings guidance for 2023 to a range of $4.91 to $4.98 a share from a previous call for $4.89 to $5.03, writing that "the external environment remains dynamic." The company also posted third-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.28 a share, missing Wall Street estimates of $1.29, according to FactSet. Net revenue was $6.28 billion. Revenue net of excise taxes was $5.3 billion. "I believe we have the appropriate strategies and people in place to execute our growth plans," said CEO Billy Gifford in the earnings release. "I continue to believe that we can achieve our Vision and create long-term value for our shareholders." Shares were down 0.9% to $42.44 in premarket trading. Coming into Thursday's trading session, they have dropped 6.3%
